Day Logo File.jpg

We would like to thank the Doris and Victor Day Foundation for their gracious grant contribution that will sustain and strengthen Palomares Social Justice Center and the communities we serve.

The Doris and Victor Day foundation began its work in 1987 with a sum acquired from the estate of Doris Dammann Day. The Days loved the community, and their business, Bear Manufacturing, grew to become a leader in automotive safety. All combined to set the grounds for a Foundation that would work to better the community in years to come, and in response to Doris Damming Day's hope that Rock Island would "be a better place" for future generations. Here is more information on the Doris Day foundation, their trajectory, opportunities, and accomplishments: http://www.dayfoundation.org/"

Information on the 1,475 “missing” children:

-These “missing” children have been in the United States since 2017 as unaccompanied children and were most likely NOT separated from their parents at the border

-In late 2017, The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (HHS/ORR) placed 7,635 unaccompanied children in the custody of family and friends known as “sponsors”

-After 30 days, HHS/ORR called the sponsors for a routine follow-up, but were unable to make contact with 1,475 of the children

-It is possible that the sponsors could not be contacted for a number of reasons, including fear over immigration status, a change in contact information, or possibly even attempts at covering up child abuse

-The United States can better serve unaccompanied children by increasing family reunification services after release

-While the 1,475 “missing” children were not separated from their families at the border, in May of 2018, there were 658 children that were in fact removed from the custody of their parents at the U.S./Mexico border

You are invited to "Tacos for the Park” on Sunday, July 26. The event will raise funds for building new accessible shelters and restrooms at McCandless Park, located at 1st Street and 7th Avenue in Moline. Donations will be accepted for three tacos and a drink. Desserts and soda will be available as well. Eat in or take out.

The fundraiser is being made possible by a $250 grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and volunteers from Hidalgo Adopt-a-Park Group, KeyStone Neighborhood Association, Palomares Social Justice Center and St. John’s Lutheran.

Anticipated improvements at McCandless Park will cost approximately $90,000. A year-long fundraising effort by community volunteers has raised just under $25,000, and the Moline Park Board has approved $45,000 for the improvements. “Tacos for the Park” is the last volunteer activity to reduce the remaining deficit.

12/06/2014: Child Abuse Prevention

Community engagement and strong intergenerational relationships are cornerstones of a healthy family life; therefore, we have applied for a grant from the Illinois Child Abuse Prevention Fund to improve the quality of our family services and to found a community garden where young and old can team up to contribute towards a greener and more family-friendly neighborhood.

11/09/2014: Taco Dinner Fundraiser

Money raised will go to fund construction of a new accessible pavilion and restrooms at McCandless Park in Moline.

Co-sponsored by the Moline Hidalgo Adopt-a-Park Group and Rock Island KeyStone Neighborhood Association.

This fundraiser allows the public to contibute to a worthy project that will expand recreational accessibilty for all families and kids at McCandless Park. The Moline Park Board approved the concept in May and have allocated some funds for accessible restrooms and pavilion. Along with the Moline Community Development Corporation, KeyStone Neighborhood Association and Hidalgo Adopt-a-Park Group plan to raise funds via grants and fundraisers to cover some of the potential $95,000 in expenses.

Since 2000, volunteers from KeyStone Neighborhood and Hidalgo Adopt-a-Park Group have made significant improvements to McCandless Park, a park shared by Moline and Rock Island residents at 9th Avenue and 1st Street, Moline. Making the park attractive, useful and safe for families and kids has been their primary goal over the years. The partnership has grown via volunteer efforts that built a new playground, upgraded the exisiting pavilion, installed sidewalks, and beautified the grounds with flowers, shrubs and new trees. Today, the park is used by families, kids playing on new, safe equipment and youth using new soccer goals.

However, one major problem remains. The current pavilion and restrooms do not meet ADA standards. They are not convenient nor safe. Sitting high on the hill, they limit the elderly and individuals, who use assitive equipment, such as walkers and wheelchairs, from participating in family events and from accessing restroom facilities. To reach the shelter, you must climb 25 feet from street level and walk over 300 feet. The poor lighting and remoteness leads to unsafe conditions. To see accessible restrooms and pavilion at McCandless Park, residents are unified across city borders in their efffort to raise money via grants, donations and Taco Dinner Fundraisers!
